Singer, modern dancer and actress from Algeria – Karima Nayt is a multi-artist that has troll-bounded audiences all around the world. Rewarded by the National Conservatory of Algiers, Karima started her career as a dancer as well as actress both on film and on stage. Attracted by the cultural life that was boiling in Cairo she decided to move there in 1998 where she came to work as a soloist-dancer in the modern dance company of the Cairo Opera House, and a singer with Grammy-awarded musician and composer Fathy Salama and his group Sharkiat with whom she made the album called “Wahdeni”.
Karima has performed on festivals and stages all over the world both as a singer and a dancer and she won numerous prizes including the Grand Prize of best actress at the 16th International Festival of Experimental Theatre in Cairo for the performance “On the table listening to Wagner” by Mohamed Shafik.
Since she left Cairo in 2007 Karima has worked mostly in Europe with different dance-productions as well as recording her long-awaited solo-album which has been produced in Sweden.
Karima writes all her lyrics herself and she sings in algerian, classical arabic and french. The title of her debut, Quoi d’autre? – What else? – is the ending line Karima has chosen for these thirteen songs – different characters who each tells us a story. They are memories, nor laughters nor tears but hidden things, real, seen and lived…
Quoi d’autre was released on ajabu! records in spring 2012 worldwide and have been awarded Album of the year at the Swedish folk & worldmusic award gala 2012, been nominated for the Swedish Manifest award 2012 and reached high positions at European world music chart. In August 2013 Karima performed at the Polar music prize ceremony in Stockholm for the winner Yossou N Dour.
